There will be many surprises at the conference and hope to see you there!
A variety of information is listed below to answer any questions that you may have about the conference.
Registration and Lodging Information
When submitting your registration, please return the SLC Registration form only. You will need to bring the Code of Conduct and Student Release Forms with you to the conference. The conference fee for this year’s conference is $125.00 per student and chaperone for WV TRiO members as well as those from neighboring states that are MEAEOPP members. Non-members will be charged $150.00 per participant and chaperone. The conference fee covers ALL meals and conference materials.
Participants will be staying at the Days Hotel Flatwoods. The room cost is $99.00 with up to four individuals to a room. With your reservation, participants receive a free continental breakfast at Vision’s Restaurant (located inside the hotel). You can contact the hotel at 1-866-700-7284 to reserve your rooms. Each program is responsible for reserving their own rooms. When you register for your rooms, please let them know that you are with the WV TRiO Student Leadership Conference room block. The room block deadline is February 7, 2012. When you check-in at the hotel, you will need to provide a copy of your tax-exempt form.
College Fair
We are in the process of setting up the college fair. The goal for the college fair this year is to have an array of Undergraduate and Graduate Schools in attendance. The College Fair will take place on Friday, February 17, 2012 from 6:30pm – 7:30pm.
Student Moderators
We request that each program select two students to serve as moderators for the conference. When you submit your registration, please select two students to serve as a Moderator for the conference. You will find the Moderator Responsibilities attached to e-mail. Moderator’s are required to attend the Moderator’s Meeting on Saturday, February 18th at 8:30am.
Anne Crum Leadership Award
Every program participating in the 2012 WV TRiO Student Leadership Conference is asked to select one of their participants to receive the Dr. Anne Crum Director's Award which will be given to the participant during the Anne Crum Leadership Banquet. All information, including a photo, are due by February 10, 2012. Submissions after this date will not be accepted. This award is available to participants from West Virginia as well as our fellow MEAEOPPians. The specific information regarding this award can be found in the attached forms.
Conference Attire
Students should dress comfortably for the conference as they will be engaged in numerous interactive activities. They will be given a t-shirt to wear on the second day of the conference. For the Anne Crum Banquet, students will want to dress semi-formally. In other words, something that they would wear to church or to a job interview. The banquet will be held at the Flatwoods Conference Center. Therefore, students should have ample opportunity to change clothes prior to the banquet and if they want to change afterward they will have easy access to their rooms. Also, be aware that the hotel has a swimming pool and hot tub that stay open until 11pm each night. Inform students that if they plan on swimming that they will need to bring appropriate attire. Also, participants are not to wear flip flops or pajama pants to any session.
Conference Speakers
We are very lucky this year to have three wonderful women speak to the conference participants. During dinner on opening night, Angie Phipps, Director of Admissions at Alice Lloyd College will be speaking to participants and encourage them to be leaders in their community. During the Town Hall session this year, Rheanna Martinez from the Council in Opportunity in Education will be leading the discussion with participants regarding the importance of having their voices heard by their members of Congress. Finally, Angie Wilkerson will be the Keynote Speaker during the Anne Crum Banquet. She is an alumni of the Student Support Services program at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in Virginia and was named the VAEOPP TRiO Achiever in 2010. Not only is she a TRiO Achiever but she also was named Ms. Wheelchair Virginia 2005. Angie has spoken at the two previous VAEOPP/WV TRiO Fall Conferences and moved those TRiO professionals who have heard tell her story to tears. Rheanna Martinez from COE will also be speaking at the Anne Crum Banquet.
Please take the time to read all forms carefully and submit by the stated deadlines. We have tried to include all of the information that you will need but if we have overlooked anything or you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
We look forward to working with each of you to ensure that the conference will be a success.
Respectfully,
Scott
